What the hell is pre-setting your table?
It's one of the easiest ways to save time, and energy, when hosting a dinner party, holiday dinner or event!
How do you do it?
Set up the tables you are eating at with everything needed for the big day, so that you don't have to bother with it on the day of the event!
This can involve doing things like:
- finding, moving and setting up tables
- cleaning tables
- adding tablecloths and decorative table runner
- adding a centerpiece or decor elements
- placing a charger or dinner plate at each setting
- adding silverware or a silverware roll
- folding decorative napkins
- adding a water glass or special beverage glasses (such as for wine or champagne or a digestifs)
- finding, moving and setting up chairs
- adding labels or signs for a seating arrangement
- placing salt and pepper shakers
- adding a container of sugar packets
- adding printed materials to each setting (like a menu or program).
Usually, I set tables with anything that won't contain food. If people need to take their seats at the table before going to a buffet, you can leave their plate at their seat or have the plates at the start of the buffet. If you are having a plated dinner that is being served, make sure to keep all family-style serving dishes in the kitchen to fill before taking them to the table.
Depending on how many guests you have, and how complicated the table setting is, pre-setting your table before your event can save you an hour or multiple hours of setup time! This can give you time to focus on cooking or mingling with your guests.
